PHOTOGRAPHY IS ABOUT PAYING ATTENTION - The details that matter

Most people look at a photograph and see the whole picture.I look at the details. A finger. A strand of hair A crease in a shirt The way a hand sits in the frame A tiny reflection A detail in the background that shouldn’t be there. These things might seem insignificant. But sometimes, they are the difference between a good photograph and a great one.

01 – The details most photographers don’t see

When someone looks at a portrait, they might simply think: „Wow. Great photograph.“* And that’s exactly how it should feel. But while they see the whole image, I’m often looking at the things they don’t consciously notice. Is the nail polish chipped? Does that finger look strange in the bottom left corner? Is a strand of hair sitting in the wrong place? Is there a small crease in the clothing? Does the person’s expression still feel natural? None of these things necessarily destroys a photograph. But together, they can change how an image feels. That’s why I pay attention.

02 – Looking beyond the obvious

Photography isn’t only about finding beautiful light or having a strong model in front of the camera. It’s about being present enough to notice what is actually happening. Sometimes I think that’s one of the biggest differences between simply taking a photograph and creating one. You don’t just press the shutter when everything looks good. You look again. And then again. You notice the small things. Because the small things are often what make the whole image work.

03 – Attention saves time

There is another reason I care so much about details: „They can save you an incredible amount of work later.“ A photographer can spend hours retouching something that could have been fixed in two seconds on set. Move a hand. Fix a strand of hair. Adjust a piece of clothing. Change the position by a few centimetres. Sometimes the best retouching decision is simply paying attention before you take the photograph. The camera records everything. So why not look at everything before you press the button?

04 – The person is a detail, too

But paying attention isn’t only about technical details. I’m also paying attention to the person. How are they feeling? Are they becoming more comfortable? Is something changing in their expression? Is there a moment happening that I shouldn’t interrupt? A portrait is still a photograph of a human being. And sometimes the most important detail isn’t a finger or a strand of hair. It’s the moment when someone finally stops thinking about the camera. That’s the moment I want to notice.

05 –  Slow down

We live in a world where taking photographs has never been easier. We can take hundreds of photographs in minutes. But having more photographs doesn’t necessarily mean having better photographs. Sometimes I think the real skill is doing the opposite. Slowing down. Looking closer. Noticing what everyone else walks past. Before I press the shutter, I want to know why I’m pressing it. And once I’ve taken the photograph, I want to look at it again. Not just at the beautiful face. Not just at the light. At everything. Because photography is not only about seeing the big picture. „Photography is about paying attention.“ And very often, the difference is hiding in the smallest detail.
